Calderys powers first waste-to-energy plant in Australia

The Calderys team in Australia has played a key role in Western Australia’s first thermal waste-to-energy (WTE) facility in Kwinana. This milestone project, featuring a 2x600 tons per day (TPD) WTE boiler, advances the region’s renewable energy landscape by converting waste into valuable energy and reducing landfill dependency.

Tackling industry challenges

The project presented a unique challenge: finding a local refractory partner with expertise in WTE applications, capable of designing, engineering, installing, and ensuring quality control while maintaining a reliable manufacturing source within Australia.

Calderys' comprehensive solution

To overcome these challenges, Calderys team in Australia implemented a strategic approach:

  • Advanced design & engineering: A German-based engineering team of Calderys optimized refractory performance, providing comprehensive documentation and a robust site quality control system.
  • Sustainable local manufacturing: The “Fiber Free” castable variant was successfully transferred to Calderys Australia, with materials produced at our Unanderra (Australia) plant.
  • Precise project management: Ensuring on-time delivery by coordinating sourcing, production, and dispatch while providing regular progress updates and on-site support.
  • Expert supervision & quality control: Calderys’ application engineers from India provided on-site supervision, troubleshooting, and quality assurance to ensure smooth installation and performance.

Delivering quality, efficiency, and sustainability

Thanks to meticulous planning and execution, the teams successfully:

  • Delivered all materials on time, including urgent site-specific orders.
  • Achieved high-quality installation with complete on-site troubleshooting and quality control.
  • Maintained strict timelines through regular progress reviews and expert guidance.

By ensuring superior performance, optimizing efficiency, and supporting sustainable energy initiatives, Calderys has set a benchmark for future WTE projects in Australia. This project reaffirms the Group’s commitment to driving sustainability through innovative refractory solutions—turning waste into energy for a better future.
