Calderys India was a proud winner in the 2017 Imerys SD (Sustainable Development) Challenge in the Communities category, rewarding their CSR efforts in promoting education by eradicating malnourishment and addiction in children.
In a small village of Ganeshpur, adjacent to the Calderys plant in Nagpur, there are 390 students who were not able to go to school due to malnourishment and addiction to tobacco chewing. Calderys took up the challenge of helping these children rise to their true potential.
To achieve this, Calderys tied up with a grassroots-level NGO to do medical pre-tests and then provide the children food and vitamin supplements based on their requirements. Every fortnight, we set up de-addiction workshops for the children, their parents, and their school teachers to get to the root cause and create awareness. Calderys also introduced the children to yoga, arts & dance, crafts, and sports to establish a culture of practicing positive behaviours.
After a year of hard and committed efforts, the results and the energy in the community is inspiring. The post-project medical tests show tremendous improvement in the general health of the childre, and the school survey shows that 60% of the children in the community are now tobacco free.
